Nu-Attlee Agreement
   Officially, the "Treaty between the Government of the United Kingdom and the Provisional Government of Burma Regarding the Recognition of Burmese Independence and Related Matters," signed by U Nu and Prime Minister Clement Attlee on October 17, 1947, in London. Defense and financial agreements were also signed. The British Parliament passed the Burma Independence Bill on December 10, 1947, and U Nu's government chose January 4, 1948, as an auspicious date for the ending of British rule.
